Abstract

This study addresses the problem of rapid urban expansion at the expense of agricultural lands and orchards in Hibhib City, which poses an environmental and economic threat to the city. The study relied on monitoring and analyzing the spatial and temporal changes in land cover and identifying changes in land use in Hibhib City. These changes were manifested in the conversion of portions of agricultural lands within the city's municipal boundaries to residential, commercial, and industrial uses. The study determined the magnitude and directions of this urban sprawl during the period from 2015 to 2025, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing data as effective tools for monitoring and analyzing spatial changes. The study aimed to determine the extent and direction of urban expansion, identify the major factors influencing this expansion, and measure the extent of encroachment on agricultural lands while examining its resulting impacts. The findings revealed that Hibhib City experienced rapid urban expansion at the expense of agricultural lands and orchards, driven by social and economic factors, as well as the weakness of laws and the inadequacy of measures adopted by official authorities. The study also demonstrated the effectiveness of Geographic Information Systems in monitoring and tracking spatial changes, supporting the city's master-planning processes, and strengthening measures aimed at protecting agricultural lands and curbing unplanned urban expansion.
