Abstract

The present study aims to identify the level of career awareness among first-year students at the College of Basic Education, University of Diyala, and to investigate differences between male and female students in their experiences and levels of career awareness. The study sample consisted of 100 undergraduate students from the College of Basic Education, University of Diyala. They were selected using a random sampling method from first-year students enrolled in all humanities departments during the (2023–2024 academic year). The researchers administered an adapted Career Awareness Attitude Scale, originally developed by Al-Azmi (2021). After statistically analyzing the data, the findings indicated that the arithmetic mean of the students’ responses regarding career awareness was high, suggesting that students demonstrated a high level of career awareness. The findings also indicated that the level of career awareness was influenced by family upbringing and social factors. With regard to gender (male and female), the findings indicated that the arithmetic means of the study sample on the career awareness scale were low, with no statistically significant difference in the overall level of career awareness between male and female students. Despite the close similarity between their arithmetic means, the results showed that female students demonstrated higher awareness of achievement-oriented professions, whereas male students demonstrated higher awareness of physically demanding professions and occupations requiring muscular strength. The study recommends that the university should pay greater attention to adopting measures that enhance students’ career awareness and should develop regulations and policies aimed at increasing career awareness before students are admitted to a particular specialization.
