Abstract

The study aims to clarify the concept of populism, as well as to clarify the definitions of the most prominent thinkers and researchers in the same field. Despite the multiplicity of these definitions, there was no comprehensive definition of this concept, and how populism began historically, through research into the stages of the popular stage. It also explains how populism has affected Western democracies through the effects that the phenomenon of populism has had on those democracies, whether political or economic. In order to explain those effects, models of the impact of populism on Western democracies were addressed. Two models were studied: the American model and the European Union model.
